Wood Green House

A new home to the side of an existing house

Satish Jassal Architects has designed a new family home on a constrained wedge-shaped infill site in Wood Green, located between a terrace of houses built in 2007 and an adjacent 1980s apartment building.

The project responds to the challenge of mediating between two differing architectural contexts and scales. The design adopts a stepped form at ground and first floor, carefully reducing its visual impact while creating a transition between the neighbouring buildings.

At ground level, the house is defined by a robust brick base using sawtooth bonding in a Staffordshire blue brick, referencing tones found within the surrounding architecture. Above, the first floor is expressed as a lighter volume clad in oak panels, creating a clear contrast and a sense of hierarchy within the building’s composition.

The upper level opens onto a balcony overlooking the generous rear garden, while a bespoke oak and glass conservatory creates a strong connection between internal living spaces and the landscape beyond.

This project demonstrates how constrained and irregular urban sites can be unlocked to deliver well-designed homes, carefully responding to context while establishing a clear contemporary identity.
