West Kensington Office Refurbishment & Extension
A complete refurbishment and new floor to an existing office
Satish Jassal Architects has secured planning permission for the refurbishment and extension of an existing 1980s office building in West Kensington, delivering upgraded workspace alongside a new rooftop addition.
The project is delivered in two phases to enable continued occupation of the building throughout construction.
Phase 1 focuses on the comprehensive refurbishment of the existing office floors, bringing them up to modern standards. The upgraded spaces incorporate new building services, including air conditioning and high-speed connectivity, alongside a mix of bespoke and standard joinery and flexible lighting strategies. The result is a range of adaptable office environments suited to small and medium-sized businesses.
Phase 2 introduces a new additional floor, designed as a mansard roof extension that responds sensitively to the surrounding conservation area. The extension is constructed using prefabricated elements to minimise disruption to existing tenants. Clad in pre-oxidised copper shingles arranged in octagonal and diamond patterns, the new roof form establishes a distinctive yet contextual architectural identity.
Projecting oak-framed windows with L-shaped glazing bring natural light deep into the new floor, enhancing the quality of the workspace. The extension delivers approximately 2,500 sq ft of additional office accommodation.
This project demonstrates how existing commercial buildings can be upgraded and extended to add additional value, improve performance and create high-quality workspace within constrained urban contexts.
