Spurgeon’s College

A remodelling and extension to the Principal’s lodge

SpurgSatish Jassal Architects has secured planning permission to remodel, extend and convert the Principal’s Lodge at Spurgeon’s College in South Norwood Hill, Croydon, delivering two new homes alongside specialist teaching accommodation.

Spurgeon’s College, an established theological institution, required a sensitive approach that balanced residential conversion with its ongoing educational use. The proposal reconfigures the existing building to create two high-quality dwellings, while also providing flexible teaching space to support the college’s needs.

The design carefully adapts and extends the existing structure, improving its functionality and long-term viability while respecting the character of the site. The intervention enhances both the residential and educational elements, ensuring they can operate effectively alongside one another.

This project demonstrates how existing institutional buildings can be repurposed and extended to deliver new housing while supporting continued educational use, unlocking additional value from underutilised assets.
