Rutland Garden Studio

A garden studio and cycle workshop

Satish Jassal Architects has developed proposals for a garden studio and cycle workshop in the conservation area of Ketton, transforming an underused garden and garage into a functional and sociable space for cycling enthusiasts.

The garden studio is carefully positioned within the landscape to minimise visual impact, with a green roof allowing the building to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. A palette of limestone and oak-framed windows reflects the local vernacular, ensuring a sensitive response to the conservation area context. The stepped frontage engages with the garden, while a large pivoting door opens the interior fully to the outside, creating a flexible and inviting space for gatherings.

The existing garage is extended to accommodate parking, cycle repair and general storage, improving its usability and supporting the needs of both residents and visiting cyclists. The design adopts a consistent material language and simple form to integrate with the wider setting.

The wider landscape strategy reimagines the garden as a usable and biodiverse environment. New planting, lawn areas and carefully positioned elements such as an oak bench and stone table create spaces for rest, social interaction and informal events.

This project demonstrates how small-scale interventions can unlock the potential of underutilised sites, combining landscape, architecture and community use to create a meaningful and enduring place.
