Opticians Victoria

A new shopfront and interior for an opticians and new skin clinic in Pimlico, Victoria

Satish Jassal Architects has redesigned an opticians practice in Pimlico, Victoria, delivering a new shopfront, full interior refurbishment and the conversion of an underused basement into a skin clinic. The project increases the overall floor area by approximately 50%, significantly enhancing the commercial viability of the premises.

The new shopfront is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Victorian frontage found along the street. Key elements such as the fascia, cornice, stall riser, recessed entrance and display windows are reinterpreted using high-quality anodised aluminium, creating a refined and durable façade that complements the local context while establishing a distinct identity.

Internally, the space is organised to support both retail and clinical functions. Bespoke oak-faced plywood joinery wraps the retail area, forming display shelving, storage and consultation zones. Floating shelves are carefully arranged to showcase products, while mirrors positioned at varying heights respond to different user groups and introduce rhythm and variation to the interior.

The basement has been transformed into a dedicated skin clinic, with the use of complementary coloured back-painted glass to distinguish between functions and enhance wayfinding.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can revitalise retail premises, combining shopfront design, interior architecture and adaptive reuse to create a cohesive and commercially effective environment.
