Kensington & Chelsea Roof Extension

A new floor and terrace within Kensington and Chelsea

Satish Jassal Architects has remodelled an existing roof space within the Colville Conservation Area in Kensington & Chelsea, transforming a constrained and underused attic into a high-quality living space with a new roof terrace.

The original roof was characterised by steep pitches and a limited external terrace, restricting both usability and daylight. The design strategically reconfigures the roof form, cutting back sections to create a generous and functional terrace that takes advantage of long views across London.

A contemporary anodised aluminium frontage with L-shaped glazing is introduced, bringing natural light deep into the lower levels while establishing a clear architectural identity. To the rear, two carefully designed dormer windows increase headroom and enable the creation of a new bedroom and ensuite.

The proposal balances modern intervention with conservation area sensitivity, ensuring the extension integrates with the existing building while enhancing its performance and usability.

This project demonstrates how roof extensions can unlock valuable additional space in central London homes, combining improved amenity, daylight and views with a refined architectural approach.
