Kensington & Chelsea Apartment Extension
Extension and internal remodel of a terrace home
Satish Jassal Architects has secured planning permission to refurbish and extend a two-bedroom duplex apartment into a five bedroom triplex within a 19th-century terrace in the Courtfield Conservation Area, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea
The project significantly increases living space through the introduction of a new basement and a triple-storey rear extension, creating three additional bedrooms and enhancing the overall functionality of the home. The design carefully balances the need for expansion with the sensitivities of the conservation area setting.
The new extension is positioned within the existing garden and is linked back to the original building via a lightweight glazed bridge, maintaining a clear distinction between old and new. At the heart of the scheme, a sculptural curved stone helix staircase connects all levels, acting as a defining architectural feature.
The proposal is developed to maximise natural light and spatial quality across the extended home, while ensuring minimal impact on neighbouring properties and the surrounding historic fabric.
This project demonstrates how complex extensions to heritage properties can unlock additional living space, combining contemporary design with careful contextual integration.
