Islington Residential Shopfront
A former shop transformed into a new home
Satish Jassal Architects has transformed a long-vacant retail unit into a new home in Islington, reimagining a declining high street frontage to support a more viable and adaptable use.
Following analysis of local conditions and footfall, the project identified residential use as the most appropriate short-term solution. However, the design was developed to remain flexible, allowing the space to revert to retail use in the future as the high street evolves.
The architectural approach reinterprets traditional shopfront proportions and detailing to create a façade that works for both residential and commercial purposes. This dual-use strategy ensures the building maintains an active presence on the street while supporting long-term adaptability.
Internally, the layout has been carefully configured to provide a high-quality living environment, while externally the design reinforces the rhythm and character of the surrounding streetscape.
This project demonstrates how redundant retail spaces can be sensitively repurposed to deliver housing, while retaining the potential for future commercial use and contributing to the regeneration of local high streets.
