Haringey Glazed Extension

Remodelling of an Victorian Townhouse with a new glazed rear double height extension

Satish Jassal Architects has refurbished and extended a 19th-century Victorian townhouse in Stroud Green, Haringey, within a conservation area, delivering a contemporary double-height glazed extension to the rear.

The existing property was in poor condition, with significant issues including damp and uneven floors. Approximately 80% of the building was stripped out, reconfigured and restored, combining careful repair of the original structure with a modern intervention that enhances the quality of the home.

The new extension is conceived as a double-height glazed and oak-framed conservatory, creating a light-filled living space that connects directly to the garden. A frameless glass-to-glass corner provides uninterrupted views of the sky, reinforcing the sense of openness and transparency.

Internally, a bespoke oak and steel staircase cantilevers over the kitchen, with integrated worktops forming part of the structure. The open-plan layout allows living spaces to flow seamlessly into one another and out to the garden, improving both functionality and spatial quality.

Three suspended oak ‘chandelier’ elements incorporate LED lighting, providing both shading and ambient illumination, while adding a distinctive architectural feature to the space.

This project demonstrates how sensitive refurbishment and contemporary extension can revitalise historic homes, balancing heritage character with modern living.

The project has been shortlisted for the Architect's Journal Retrofit Awards 2021.
