Bounds Green Corner & Roof Extension

Remodelling of an art deco building

Satish Jassal Architects has remodelled a prominent corner of a 1930s Art Deco building opposite Bounds Green Underground Station, transforming a neglected and poorly altered façade into a distinctive urban marker.

The project replaces unsympathetic white UPVC glazing at the curved corner with a bronze-coloured glazing system, restoring a sense of coherence and quality to the building. The design draws inspiration from the nearby Bounds Green Underground Station by Charles Holden, reinterpreting Art Deco principles through a contemporary lens.

A series of projecting horizontal bands emphasise the building’s curved geometry, increasing in scale as they rise and culminating in a pronounced roofline visor. Tall glazed openings reinforce the vertical rhythm while enhancing visibility and presence at street level.

An additional storey has been introduced to the corner, increasing both office and residential accommodation, while carefully responding to the existing building and surrounding context.

Located on a busy junction, the scheme redefines the corner as a strong civic element, improving the streetscape and contributing positively to the wider area. The project demonstrates how targeted interventions and rooftop extensions can revitalise existing buildings, unlocking additional space while enhancing architectural character.
